Life is the answer of the nature to the conflict between
the spontaneous decrease of complexity (growth of entropy) and need of
complex catalysts to accelerate such processes. Indeed, many processes
which are spontaneous (go with increase of degrees of freedom) go very
slowly. But complex catalyst which could be very effective will fall appart
very fast (due to that very need of entropy increase), so they can not
accelerate entropy increase for long. For example disell fuel will not
react with oxigen by itself, but reacts with it inside a motor. But motor
will wear and break quite soon. However - motor can use part of freed energy
for some "its own" purposes and this is the whole trick. Life
is a catalyst, a "motor" which uses the freed energy to repair and reproduce
itself. What does it have to do with the picture? Who cares...
